Landscape w/Figure in Pastels - Working From Photographs:
July 9th & 10th, Wed. & Thur., 12:30 - 5pm
Barrett Art Center, Poughkeepsie

The workshop will cover how to use photos as a reference, setting up the model, taking spontaneous shots, the importance of light and color, and understanding 3-dimensional structure and ariel perspective in developing your composition. I will stress the importance of "creating the illusion of reality" in working from photos and will address the process. Pastels are a spontaneous medium, allowing you to mix color on the painting surface. The light condition and colors of the composition will be stressed along with proportion and the method of pastel application. Photos will be supplied.

The Portrait in Pastels:
August 13th & 14th, Wed. & Thur., 12:30 - 5pm
Barrett Art Center, Poughkeepsie

Achieving a strong likeness and understanding the pastel painting process is the goal of this workshop - creating color sketches at first to get to know the subject. We will concentrate on learning the 3-dimensional structure of the head and facial features and the role posture plays in determining the individual. Setting up the model regarding clothing, color composition, environment, pose and lighting and the importance of the subject being relaxed will be areas stressed. We will work some from photos but mostly from a live model.
